Books are very personal. Many collectors feel a closeness with their books and don’t want to consider giving any away. But if you’re looking for a life-change, are feeling lethargic or stuck, I highly recommend taking yourself on a tour through your books. A thoughtful and honest look at your books can give you insight on where you’ve been, and where you want to go in the future. You may find weight you are ready to let go of, and inspiration for paths yet to be taken.
This list focuses on places that specifically work with books, music, and movies, but you can also donate these items to several other places in the area. Check out my post on where to take donations.
All donations should be in good used condition. Please recycle or discard books with stains, tears, missing pages, and water or mold damage.
1 | Isle of Books
NEW LOCATION - 511 West Mendenhall, Bozeman | (406) 219-3581
Their process: They offer a $2 store credit for most gently used books. You can bring books in anytime they are open, but if you have an extra large collection, you may want to call ahead. They have a no-trash policy, so if they cannot use a book, they will either donate it to the library or recycle it, depending on the condition. They will also take used records, CDs and DVDs.
2 | Bozeman Public Library
626 E. Main St, Bozeman | (406) 582-2400
Their process: Donations are accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 pm or until the storage area is full. Bring donations to the maroon doors at the southwest corner of the library (nearest the parking lot). They accept books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, records and rare and collectible books.
Current magazines can be brought directly to the exchange bins at the library's north entrance anytime, or to the double doors during donation hours.
3 | Vargo’s Jazz City & Books
6 W. Main St, Bozeman | (406) 587-5383
Their process: Buying times are Wednesday and Thursdays from 10am-2pm, and Fridays from 10am-1pm. You don’t need an appointment, but it’s best to call ahead to make sure the book-buyer will be in that day. Bring in your books. They will look through them and make you an offer on the ones they’d like to purchase. You can choose to sell, or not. They don’t buy business books, text books, romance novels, or books with any damage. And again, you can always call ahead during the times listed above to ask the book-buyer their opinion on your collection.
Got other stuff to get rid of? Check out my other posts on where to take donations, and where to sell or consign your stuff.
I hope this was helpful! And as always, if I’ve missed someone who should be included on this list, please let me know in the comments below, or by email at michell@michelldomke.com
