I love thrifting, yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, and generally finding stuff on the side of the road, but it wasn’t always that way for me. If you’re unfamiliar with this type of shopping, it may feel overwhelming, awkward, or as the kids say ‘cringe.’ So I put together a list of my top tips to help you through the process.
Top Thrift Shopping Tips:
Go in with an open mind. You never know what you’ll find!
Make a shopping list, but keep it general. Chances are high that you won’t find exactly what you’re looking for, but if you keep a list of general things in a note on your phone, you’ll be able to be more creative in your finds.
Let your creativity flow! With an open mind and a general shopping list to keep you on track, you’ll be able to consider how a variety of items may work for you.
Own your own style and interests. Thrifting is a great way to develop your own personal style by finding clothes and home decor that sparks your interest, and isn’t totally influenced by trends. Everything at Target is so cute, all the time, but it’s trendy and everyone’s buying it. Do you really like it, or will your interest in it pass quickly? And honestly, you’ll probably find it at the thrift store in 6 months.
Always carry a tape measure. Keep a list of measurements for things you are looking for in a note in your phone. If you’re looking for a table, measure the space you have, so you know what size you’re looking for. If you have a tape measure with you, you’ll be ready to measure possible options.
Think about how you could repurpose, refinish, or alter items. And ask yourself if it’s worth it? Some people are great at following through on DIY projects, others are not. You know which one you are. Don’t get stuff that doesn’t work for you.
Don’t buy it just because it’s cheap. That’s the fastest way to spend all your money and fill your house up with junk that doesn’t fit your wants and needs. ‘nuf said.
It’s all about the hunt. You’ve got to be ready to look. Some places are really organized by color, size, style - some less so. If you’re not in the mood to hunt, don’t bother going at all.
Bring snacks and water. It helps keep you going! Nothing is worse than when your energy is crashing, and you’re having a good thrifting day.
These tips also apply for yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, and are good reminders for life in general.
